WeMachines vs Asana
Asana is the grown-up way to manage projects: owners, due dates, dependencies, portfolios, goals, and a dashboard that tells leadership how it is all going. It is very good at describing work. WeMachines is built for doing it, by a team that does not want to write the status update at all.
Status updates
The Asana ritual is the weekly update: someone reads the board, writes the paragraph, sets the color. Asana AI will now draft that paragraph for you. In WeMachines nobody writes it, because the thing doing the work reports itself. A coding agent starts on a ticket and the sidebar shows a live coding mark next to the person who launched it. The task moves itself into progress and out again when the code lands. A routine posts the Monday digest into a channel on its own. Knowing who is on what is a glance, and the meeting to find out is gone.
Tickets
We never write tickets ourselves. The AI reads the whole workspace, so it files a task from the thread that needs one, fills it in and moves it as the work progresses. Something changes in chat? The ticket changes too. Finished tasks delete themselves after 14 days, so the board only ever shows what is alive.
AI
Asana AI summarizes, fills smart fields and, with AI Studio, wires rules into a project. It works from inside a project tool, describing work that happens somewhere else. The AI in WeMachines reads the chat, the tasks, the docs, the polls, the huddle transcripts and the recent commits, and then it does the work. Assign it a task and a cloud agent works your repo and opens the pull request you review. Press ⌘O and brief it by voice. It searches the live web for what the workspace does not hold, and it runs on 200+ models, plug and play, with zero data retention.
Amazing context
An Asana team's data lives in Asana, a chat tool, a docs tool, a call tool and GitHub, and none of that is built to work together. To make an AI accurate you have to connect all of it, somehow, and keep it connected. In WeMachines everything is already in one place, every channel is public and there are no DMs, so the agents see the whole company and nobody briefs them. No repeated attempts, no lost information, no maintenance.
Stitching tools
Everything is one app, and when we need a tool it does not have, we describe it and WeMachines builds it as an App, hosted, with its own address and its own database. Routines run on a cadence or on a webhook. The Claude Code, Cursor or Codex already open in a teammate's terminal joins the same board over MCP with one line in the repo root, free on every plan. We spend zero time on integrations.
Where Asana is ahead
Coordinating and reporting across many teams. Portfolios, goals, workload, timelines and the admin controls a large organization asks for are things Asana has refined for years, and a company running dozens of projects across departments that do not ship software will get more from Asana than from us.
Side by side
| WeMachines | Asana | |
|---|---|---|
| Core idea | One workspace for a software team and its agents | Project and work management |
| Status | Agents report themselves, live on the board | Written by people, drafted by Asana AI |
| Tickets | Written and moved by the AI, gone 14 days after done | Written and moved by people |
| AI | Reads the whole workspace, ships pull requests, 200+ models | Asana AI and AI Studio, beside the work |
| Chat, docs and calls | Native, one context for the AI | Other tools |
| Your own agents | Claude Code, Cursor or Codex join over MCP, free | Integrations |
| Custom tools | Apps built and hosted on request, routines on webhooks | Rules and third-party apps |
| Built on | Your GitHub repo, commits in, pull requests out | Its own platform |
Conclusion
Asana tells leadership how the work is going. WeMachines gets the work done, and the report writes itself because the agents doing it are on the board.
Every new workspace starts on a 14-day trial of the Start-up plan, with 1,000 AI credits and no card; after that it is per seat, see pricing. Drop an Asana CSV on the Import page and every task comes across word for word, sections, tags and custom fields included. We wrote down what running on it looks like for our own team in Building WeMachines on WeMachines, and surveyed the wider field in the 7 best Asana alternatives.
